SANTANA DO ARAGUAIA
GET TO KNOW THE HEART OF THE ARAGUAIA BIODIVERSITY CORRIDOR
The Black Jaguar Foundation has been focussing its efforts of ecological restoration on Santana do Araguaia. We are currently building a nursery in the region, which will have the capacity to generate 500 thousand seedlings per year.
Fazenda Santa Fé was one of the first-ever farmers to partner with the Black Jaguar Foundation. Taking a leap of faith because they felt passionate about restoring nature and committing to our huge restoration mission.
About the municipality
Santana do Araguaia is a city in the South of Pará, next to Bananal island, one of the biggest river islands in the world. It is near the Araguaia River, between the federal states of Mato Grosso (MT) and Tocantins (TO). The region is known for cattle breeding and growing soy has become one of its main economic activities.
Its proximity to the river, central location along the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor, and dependence on farming, make it incredibly important to our mission. In relation to its native vegetation, Santana do Araguaia belongs to an Ecotone Biome. This means that it is near two diverse biomes: The Amazon Rainforest and the Cerrado Savana. It serves as a transition space, where different species can be found, and therefore has vast and varied native biodiversity!
Weather conditions
The dry season generally takes place from April to September, while the rainy season is usually from October to March.
This knowledge allows us to plan our planting season accordingly, so that planting goes smoothly during the rainy season. Planning and preparation are pertinent to realising the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor!
Fazenda Santa Fé is the location where the initial planting of our first million native trees took place starting in October 2020. Santa Fé host many of the restoration sites we are restoring during the 2021-2022 planting season to complete our first million native trees. See the map location of our restoration site below…
We are stronger together
The Black Jaguar Foundation is currently finalising our third nursery, located in Santana do Araguaia. It will be one of the biggest nurseries in the region, capable of producing 500 thousand seedlings per year.
The Araguaia Seed Collection Collective
We are also developing a Seed Collection Collective which will provide our project with seeds native to the Amazon Rainforest and the Cerrado Savana. This initiative also shows an immense potential to supplement the income of groups living near the Araguaia River!
