Greenfinity Foundation extends BJF Green Partnership

We are excited to announce the continuation of our partnership with Greenfinity Foundation! Greenfinity Foundation, seated in Graz, Austria, is committed to actively supporting initiatives that promote the preservation of natural habitats. As one of Greenfinity’s chosen organizations, the Black Jaguar Foundation is honored to be working together and receiving support to realize the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor, part of which will become the Greenfinity Forest! 

In line with their motto, “Together for our World. A Future Together”, the Greenfinity Foundation has been implementing sustainable environmental and climate projects across the globe since its foundation in 2011. We are excited to continue working together with our valued partner, and together work towards realizing the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor, and safeguarding our future.

Tarcila Ursini: BJF’s First Female Brazilian Ambassador

BJF Becomes Actor for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration

What is the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration? 

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which officially launched this year, was created to lead and unite international cooperation for the effective restoration of natural ecosystems, ensuring a sustainable future for all future generations. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to unite the many non-profit organizations, businesses, and individual actors that play a key role in the global movement for the restoration of natural ecosystems, and the construction of an economy built around restoration.  

The role of Black Jaguar Foundation as an Actor for the UN Decade 

As an official partner to the UN Decade, the Black Jaguar Foundation acts as a valuable contributor to the initiative, with an ambition to restore the Amazon and Cerrado biomes by realizing the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor.

COP 26 & Why it is so Important

Your feed has probably been filled with reminders about COP26, happening from the 31st of October until the 12th of November, and for good reason. In case you were wondering why everyone is talking about this conference, and why it is so important for you and for us here at Black Jaguar Foundation, keep reading! 

COP26 refers to the 26th UN Climate Change Conference, which have happened yearly since 1995. At this two-week summit, all stakeholders, and signatories of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), an international environmental treaty addressing climate change, come together to discuss the climate crisis on a global level. 

The topics covered at COP26 will include the presentation of the latest commitments to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by government and business leaders, as well as the discussion of scientific efforts to track emissions, understand impacts and advance potential climate solutions.  

Specifically, this COP represents the first major test of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, to limit global warming to 1.5-2°C. The recently released IPCC report, however, shows that climate commitments are not on track to meet the Paris Agreement. To be truly impactful, this COP would result in a well-defined set of policy commitments from governments to curb emissions.

UN Biodiversity Chief, Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, has urged COP26 climate talks to prioritise nature: “Climate change is becoming an increasingly serious driver of biodiversity loss and ecosystems degradation – and that loss threatens to worsen climate change”. Therefore, while cutting carbon emissions is a priority at the conference, protecting and restoring biodiversity will hopefully also be discussed as a critical component.  

 

How COP 26 affects you & us at the Black Jaguar Foundation 

Often, these global, political conferences can feel far removed from our own daily lives. However, the outcomes of COP26 will have a major impact on many of our lives.  

First, if national commitments are implemented in your country to reduce carbon emissions, citizens will be impacted in terms of their daily actions and choices.  

Secondly, if agreements are not reached and commitments are failed to be implemented, we will be affected by the increase in natural disasters, including wildfires, floods, and climate devastation, across the globe and close to home.  

While it can be overwhelming to read about all the decisions being made at the COP 26, there are small actions you can take yourself to help achieve the vital aims set out in this conference. One easy way you can help, is by helping the Black Jaguar Foundation in realizing the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor. The restoration of biodiversity along the corridor will result in countless benefits, including the mitigation of climate change. More than 100 world leaders have promised to end and reverse deforestation by 2030, in the COP26 climate summit’s first major deal. The signatories represent 85% of Earth’s forests, including: Canada, Brazil, Russia, China, Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the US and the UK.

The pledge includes $19.2 billion of public and private funds, which will go to developing countries to restore damaged land, prevent wildfires and support indigenous communities.

Introducing BJF’s New Seed Collection Collective!

We are currently in the process of setting up our own Seed Collection Collective, to provide seeds for our restoration project! The pilot project has recently been completed successfully in Barreira do Campo, with promising prospects for the future of the collective.

While this collective is mainly aimed at providing our project with seeds, it also brings further benefits, such as improving local employment. Within this pilot project, six seed collectors were indirectly employed, demonstrating the potential that this Seed Collection Collective has in boosting local employment in the area.

Movida Redesigns Stores to Include BJF – Carbon Free Programme

To increase the visibility of its Carbon Free Programme, Movida is redesigning its stores around Brazil to include the programme at the very forefront of its brand! The new store design also includes the Black Jaguar Foundation logo, which we are extremely proud of. Movida is the first car rental company to create a Carbon-Free programme, with the goal to compensate 100% of their carbon emissions by the end of 2030.

In 2019, Movida started the carbon compensate partnership with the Black Jaguar Foundation as a way to support one of the largest nature corridors in the world, the Araguaia River Biodiversity Corridor. The Black Jaguar Foundation-Movida partnership will result in one million native trees being planted, during 2020-2022, in the heart of Brazil. BJF Presents at IUCN World Congress Marseille

On the 9th of September, Black Jaguar Foundation had the opportunity to present its project and ambitions at the IUCN World Congress Marseille, the largest nature congress in the world. It was an honor to present our work in front of such an inspiring and renowned audience. A big thank you to IUCN Netherlands and World Congress for making this possible!

The team received lots of helpful and positive feedback on the progress of the project, and the quality of the work we do, for which we are very grateful. The session, named ‘Large Scale Ecological Restoration: The Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor’ was recorded and is now available for you to watch!

Meet BJF’s New Technical Ecological Restoration Committee

In September, Black Jaguar Foundation’s newly created Technical Committee had its first meeting. The committee is composed of four qualified specialists from different areas, and two of BJF’s forest engineers. They are currently giving their input and advice on our the plans to drastically scale up our operations in the field during the rainy / planting seasons for the next 5 years.

The members include: Ingo Isernhagen, Sâmia Nunes, Júlia Mangueira, and Maxmiller Ferreira. With the help of their expertise and the time they are willing to dedicate to the Black Jaguar Foundation’s mission, we believe their input will be of greate value. Ingo Isernhagen, a Biologist and Researcher at on Ecological Restoration at EMBRAPA, with a PhD in Forest Ecosystems Conservation.

Sâmia Nunes, a Forest Engineer with a PhD in Environmental Sciences, working as a Researcher on Ecological Restoration at Instituto Tecnológico Vale.

Júlia Mangueira, a Biologist with a PhD in Plant Biology, working as Deputy Manager for Sustainable Agriculture Brazil | The Nature Conservancy.

Maxmiller Ferreira, a Biologist and Ecologist with a MSc in Ecology, working as a Specialist in Direct Seeding Technique at Caminhos da Semente.

Adopt a Tree at Olmenhorst Estate & Plant a Tree in Brazil!

Landgoed de Olmenhorst, on behalf of their adopt a tree program, has partnered with the Black Jaguar Foundation! The Estate in Haarlemmermeer, grows apple and pear trees, and other crops according to organic principles.

For each adoption of a tree on its Estate, you can now also donate a tree to the Black Jaguar Foundation. For every 2 trees donated by its customers, Olmenhorst donates another tree to the Black Jaguar Foundation. Once you have adopted a tree at the estate, you can pick apples during any harvest season!
