BJF PILOT PROJECT
Ecological cattle farming

By News Home

In the past 8 months, the BJF has worked closely with cattle farmer and entrepreneur Mr. Guilherme Tiezzi, who has 2 farms in the Araguaia Corridor zone. His farms will be the first to be consulted by the BJF and its  partners, to transition to ecological and sustainable farming.

Guilherme is not only a partner in the BJF pilot project, but also an ecotourism entrepreneur. With the foresight and desire towards sustainable farming, Mr. Tiezzi will truly set an example for all other cattle-farmers in the Araguaia Corridor.

BJF PILOT PROJECT
Mapping 6.000ha

By News Home

The month of November marked the conclusion of the first phase of the BJF pilot project to map and plan the restoration of the first 6.000 HA along the Araguaia Corridor zone. Thanks to our partnership with the restoration laboratory LERF (University of São Paulo) and the specialized reforestation company BIOFLORA, we have gathered the information to analyze the degraded areas and start implementing the restoration actions.

Those will include seedling donations, capacity building and consulting to the landowners. Once we have raised the required funding, we will start the replanting of the first batch of infant trees immediately.

As a result of our presentations at the IUCN Congress, a major article about the BJF and the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor was published in one of Brazil’s leading newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. The positive involvement of this nationwide (quality) newspaper has already given us access to a number of landowners who have become ‘pearls’ of the Araguaia Corridor!

IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016

By News Home

The IUCN World Conservation Congress, held last September in Hawaii, was truly a milestone for BJF. The BJF Team delivered two presentations: the BJF E-Poster and a speech at the UNCCD event “Tackling land degradation on-the-ground”.

During the congress, we held meetings with top conservation organizations such as the IUCN, Conservation International, World Resources Institute, the Rainforest Alliance and the Ministry of Environment of Brazil, a major supporter of ecological corridors. In total we met over 100 people in the world of conservation to initiate partnerships to help realize the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor.

We even had the chance to meet the ‘Green Princess of the Middle East’ and invited her to become part of our team! Soon more updates!

THE CERRADO SAVANNA

By News Home

You have certainly heard, at some point in your life, about the importance of the Amazon Rainforest for humankind, correct? Still there is another vital ecosystem to all of us that is less known and has been suffering for decades: the Cerrado Savannah.

The Cerrado tropical savannah covers 20% of Brazilian territory (over 2.000.000 km2!) and is recognized as the richest Savannah in the world in terms of biodiversity. Moreover, the sources of three of the most important water basins in South-America are located in the Cerrado. This extreme value contrasts with a devastating degradation record: more than 50% of this biome has already been deforested.  The BJF works to restore these degraded areas back to its original rich habitat. After all 60% of the Araguaia Corridor Zone is located in the Cerrado.

THE “FLYING RIVERS”

By News Home

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=71&v=Iv7AUoheeQs

Have you ever heard of the “flying rivers”? This term was created to define the giant quantities of water that float above the Amazon rainforest and Cerrado. They come from the tonnes of water that evaporate from the trees: it is a green water factory! Huge masses of vapour travel thousands of miles bringing rainfall over Latin America. The droughts in South East Brazil prove what we have known for a long time: no forests, no rain!
