2023/2024 Planting Season: our team working on the ground

By News Home

Amidst another planting season, our field team continues to work intensively to successfully complete growing and planting many trees! We have already finished the areas with direct seeding, and in the coming months, we will finish the planting of the seedlings.

At the moment, we have already finished the areas of direct seeding, and by the end of this month, we are focused on planting seedlings. Meanwhile, we continue to maintain the already restored areas, especially the more recent ones, in previous rainy seasons.

ASSISTED REGENERATION AS AN ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION TECHNIQUE

For March, the assisted regeneration will be conducted. In the last planting season, 30 hectares were restored through this technique. Given the good results obtained, we want to further explore the method and take full advantage of the region’s potential.

BJF PLANNING FOR THE COMING MONTHS

In the last months of the rainy season, with ecological restoration already completed, it will be time to focus efforts on maintenance and monitoring the areas planted in previous years. And, as expected, start planning for the next planting season!

By News Home

On 15 January 2024 we presented our mission to realize the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor, at the Climate Hub in collaboration with GreenUp, supported by the World Economic Forum and the City of Davos.

We are honoured and proud that Prof. Carlos Nobre became our official Ambassador! As one of the most renowned Earth System Scientist, Nobel prize winner and guardian of the Amazon, Carlos Nobre represents the science and the importance beyond our project, and the necessity to take action now.

Our mission of Hope and Action, is backed up by science, our impact study and ambassadors such as Carlos Nobre that advocate the positive social and environmental effects the 2600 km long Araguaia Corridor will create in the region and beyond.

Not only did we meet a lot of new people and made the first steps in building new long-term partnerships. It was also a great opportunity to connect and re-connect to our existing partners, learn from other NGOs and leaders in the field of restoration and biodiversity and work together with the BJF Team.

We are happy to share some pictures and videos of the event and stay tuned for more updates.

Giving Tuesday 2023: celebrate the culture of giving and contribute to a better world

By News Home

We’re a week away from Giving Day! We encourage you to participate in this culture of giving movement.

Giving Tuesday is an initiative that aims to mobilize organizations and connect people to make impact towards the end of the year. And the Black Jaguar Foundation wants to make this edition the biggest.

Black Jaguar Foundation & Giving Tuesday: Together for a more sustainable world!

Since you are the one who makes Giving Day happen, we want to ask for your help: be a part of this initiative! You and your company can contribute to the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor in various ways:

Learn more about the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor

Black Jaguar, along with farmers and local communities in the Araguaia region, is realizing one of the largest ecological restoration projects on Earth. By recovering degraded areas, we are creating an ecological corridor along the Araguaia River to bring back the biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforest and the Cerrado savanna.

Our project is ambitious; we aim to plant around 1.7 billion trees in 1 million hectares over the next 20 years. Currently, we have more than 25 partner landowners, and we’ve already planted the first 700,000 trees.

The initial years were full of learning, and now it’s time to expand our operations. In the next two years, we will complete the first 2 million trees planted. But we can’t do this alone! That’s why we are building an even stronger community of supporters, including companies, organizations, volunteers, and advocates.

Giving Day is the perfect opportunity to strengthen this community even further. Will you join us? Help promote the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor!

Before & After: 5 years of the Black Jaguar Pilot Project

By News Home

Every ambitious project needs a starting point, and we can now show you the effects of our Ecological Restoration efforts kicked off during the 18/19 planting season with the planting of 20,000 trees.

In the following seasons, we expanded our field team, forged new rural partnerships, and, five years later, nearly 700,000 trees are growing on about 300 hectares along the Araguaia River, and the results for nature are already visible in satellite images!

Before x After

In the images above, you can see the before and after of the areas where we worked in the early planting seasons. A significant difference is already noticeable, and the best part is that this is just the beginning. For the next few years, our goal is even more ambitious: we want to plant the first 2 million trees by 2026. Can you imagine witnessing this transformation on an even larger scale? We can’t wait to show you!

Step by step, we are bringing back the region’s biodiversity and undertaking one of the planet’s largest ecological restoration projects: the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor. Support this project and help us build a better world for future generations!

TreeLove visits the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor

By News Home

Black Jaguar had the honor of hosting our long-time partner, Andrea Dreesmann, founder of TreeLove, in Santana do Araguaia. Along three days of visit, we had an excellent opportunity to present our work and the ever-growing socio-environmental impact our project is making in the region! A big thank you goes out to Andrea Dreesmann and the Treelove Team.

There were three days of visits to Black Jaguar’s main locations: the restoration areas, the seedling nursery and even seed collection.

Black Jaguar Foundation Seedling Nursery

On the first day in Santana do Araguaia, Andrea Dreesmann visited the nursery, already filled with seedlings that will be planted early next year.

At that time, Norivânia Diniz, our seedling production analyst, took the opportunity to explain the seedling production process – and the TreeLove founder got her hands dirty! Check out the images:

Visit to restoration sites

After the seedling production process, it’s time to see all the seed and seedlings developing in our restoration areas. We took Andrea Dreesmann to one of our partner rural properties to show a restored area from 11 months ago. Our supporter also took the opportunity to plant her own tree. Check it out:

Collecting seeds with the Araguaia Seed Network

To showcase the impacts that the Araguaia Seeds Network is generating for local populations, we invited Laís D’Isep, seed production analyst responsible for mobilizing communities and conducting training.

And since we couldn’t miss the opportunity to introduce Andrea to local communities – the true heroes behind the seed collection that makes our ecological restoration possible – we took a small boat to an island in the Araguaia River. There, a seed-collecting couple accompanied us on an expedition in search of native seeds from the region’s flooded areas.

After this intense immersion in the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor, we were able to show up close our work and the extent of the socio-environmental impact our project is making in the region.

Reuters Article: Forests key to climate fight, study suggests

By News Home

The piece, written by Jake Spring, begins by highlighting that, according to a scientific study, restoring global forests could sequester 22 times as much carbon as the world emits in a year, making the case that trees are a key tool in confronting the climate crisis along with cutting fossil fuels.
